Sara Habgood’s paintings occupy a space between abstraction, landscape and architecture. Drawing on the clarity and geometry of Mid-Century Modernism, her work reduces observations of landscape, harbours, buildings and the sea into carefully balanced arrangements of colour, line and form.

Ben Nicholson has been a longstanding influence. Sara wrote her Goldsmiths thesis on Nicholson, and his ability to distil the visible world into essential forms continues to inform her approach to composition, texture and surface.

The paintings are built through successive layers of colour and mark-making, with earlier elements often partially removed, obscured or allowed to remain visible. Rhythm is equally important: music, particularly jazz, frequently accompanies the painting process and is reflected in repetitions, intervals and unexpected shifts within the composition.

Many works are finished with a high-gloss resin surface, intensifying colour and creating a depth and luminosity that changes subtly with the surrounding light.
